English 7/8

Black History Month Project

Purpose: Students will choose a person, event, or other historical item that has impacted black history in the United States. Students will research the topic of their choice and gather enough information to compose a three-paragraph expository essay. Final essays will be accompanied by a graphic created by students. Students will create bibliographies to show where they obtained information for this assignment.

Due date: Monday, February 13, 2012 (A Day)

Steps to complete this project:

1. Choose a topic of interest to you.

2. Begin gathering information on your topic (use the library at school, the public library, and/or the internet).

3. Keep track of where you are getting your information. Write down website URLs, the date you accessed them, and fill out the works cited form from the library.

4. Get your topic approved by Mrs. Filippo by the end of class on Thursday, January 26, 2012.

5. Use the information you gathered about your topic to write a three-paragraph expository essay telling about your topic.

6. Questions to consider in your essay: Who is this person? Background information? What happened? Why is this important? How did it affect history or civil rights? How might the U.S. or the world be different without this person or event?

7. Create a visual or audio accompaniment for your project. Examples: draw a portrait, read an excerpt from a song, book, or speech, write a poem, or short story about your topic and read it aloud, draw your event, etc. Be creative; there are no “rules.”

Due Dates/Timeline:

1/24- Whole-class brainstorming/research on SMART board

1/26- Computer Lab for project research

2/3-Library trip for more research

2/7- Computer Lab for word processing essays

2/9- Computer Lab for word processing essays

TBD-One more trip to lab to type (if needed)

Notes:

Some of this assignment will be done in class.

Students will be expected to finish whatever they do not complete in class at HOME!

See me for help-do NOT procrastinate!

Do NOT forget about you audio or visual piece!
